Storage Tips for Motorcycles
Not all people drive their motorcycles year round. Often, motorcycling is a hobby for many or even a vacation purpose. It is not always their sole method of transportation. And, although the bike can be stored in one's own garage, many require rental storage space, since they need the garages for their cars and other property. But, before putting your motorcycle into storage, whether in your own garage, or in a paid-for unit, take a look at these storage tips to ensure the least amount of trouble when you take the bike out for its first ride next season.
Remove the Battery and Recharge Regularly
Motorcycle batteries sulfate easily because of the continual drain on them. Since the motorcycle is not being driven, the battery discharges and sulfates which renders it useless. To avoid this problem, remove the battery completely while in the bike is in storage, and place it on a charger every few weeks, so that it will work properly when installed back on the motorcycle.
Spray Oil on Exhaust System
The parts of the exhaust system on a motorcycle are susceptible to rusting from the moisture of the snow and ice melting, as well as humidity in the air. To help keep the muffler and other exhaust parts clean and shiny, first spray them with a thin or light oil, and then cover them with protective bags to keep the moisture away from the actual material. It might even be a good idea to spray in the holes of the exhaust pipe.
All Fluids Should Be Full and Clean
Use the storage preparation time to change the oil, top up any low fluids, flush the brake, clutch and coolant fluids, and add antifreeze coolant for colder temperatures. Leaving this process until the next time you bring the bike out of storage could cause corrosion to the parts if the fluids are contaminated. Store with as fresh gas as possible. Try to ride the bike until you can get the gas tank down enough to fill it with fresh gas. This helps to prevent moisture contamination and oxidization. Empty the fuel lines and carburetor.
Keep Tires Off the Floor
To help preserve the tires, it is recommended that you place either a wood sheet or piece of cardboard under the tires, so that they are not touching the cold or freezing floor area. Be sure to inflate the tires to the proper air pressure to avoid rubber cracking.
Wax the Motorcycle and Keep Out of Sun's Rays
Before storing the bike, it is a good idea to wax it to preserve the finish. Wax coats the accessories, and makes it harder for moisture and water to penetrate. When placing the bike in storage, try to find an area that is not close to the window, or a room that is windowless. This will keep everything from fading, since the continual sun shining on the bike deteriorates the paint and finish. Lastly, throw a cover over the bike to keep dust off and other unwanted residue like mice or bird droppings. Store the leather seat at home if you can to be sure rodents do not chew it up.
